- buildable by me (I’ll contract out excavation / foundation, potentially roofing)
- test out building materials and assembly details for potential future use on my residence
- test out how much I enjoy playing owner/builder for potential future use on my residence
Essential workshop goals:
- safe material storage during construction of my residence (lockable place to keep lumber, siding, pre-hung doors, etc.)
- easy movement on foot between workshop and residence, to encourage quick lil’ projects
- workshop for all interior finishing of my residence: cabinets, shelves, paneling, trim, etc.
- regular place to store my car (carport)
- safe place to store my car when I’m out of country for extended periods
- overflow storage for my residence: camping equipment, earthquake supplies, junk
- lumber storage
- electronics workstation: vented soldering area, well-lit workbench
- CNC workstation (keep computer/operator in a quiet area away from machine, but with machine visible)
- sink for cleaning stuff
- “clean room” for staining, painting, and other delicate, dust-free tasks
- place to store flammable / volatile things (e.g., solvents cabinet)
- doesn’t look like a pole-barn filled with junk
Nice-to-have workshop goals:
- laundry area (depending on residence design)
- overflow sleeping space for guests
- shower / rise-down space (for people or stuff)
- welding / metalworking area
- convertable into future living-space
- Dwell magazine centerfold
